UGANDA, Entebbe | Real Muloodi NewsTheObwananyini Kutakaproject has enabled 100 marginalised women, including widows, to secure land titles in Entebbe, marking a critical step in advancing women’s land rights in Uganda. The initiative, which targets 1,000 women in its broader agenda, reached this milestone during its first phase.

“This is a life-changing moment, said Geraldine Nalule, one of the beneficiaries. With my land title secured, I can confidently plan for my family’s future without fear of losing what is rightfully mine.

Nalule’s case is emblematic of the project’s broader mission to address the challenges faced by women in claiming ownership under existing laws and traditions.

The success of the initiative has been credited to its strategic community engagement and collaboration with organisations like Action for Liberty and Economic Development.

Project Coordinator John Mugabi remarked,Our approach combines advocacy, education, and direct action to dismantle discriminatory practices and empower women to assert their rights.”

The effort to secure land titles in Entebbe aims to impact over 1,000 individuals in 234 households, with a target of ensuring that at least 60% of registered properties are owned by women.

Partnerships with local government bodies, the Buganda Kingdom, and Uganda’s Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development have played a significant role in advancing these objectives.

Mugabi highlighted the importance of collaboration:Our progress is the result of joint efforts with various stakeholders. We are particularly grateful for the support from Action for Liberty and Economic Development in addressing systemic barriers.”

Beyond land title acquisition, the project emphasises capacity building, training, and policy advocacy.

The broader goal is not just to secure individual titles but to create a societal shift where women’s ownership is normalised and supported,Mugabi added.

The initiative also seeks to enhance community resilience by equipping women with resources to protect their assets and contribute to local economic growth.

Land rights are fundamental to achieving gender equality and sustainable development,Mugabi said.

The project’s comprehensive strategy includes surveying, mapping, and formal registration of properties, coupled with sensitisation programs to challenge long-standing gender biases.

We are committed to sustaining this momentum and expanding our reach across Uganda,Mugabi stated.Empowering women through land ownership is not only transformative for families but also for entire communities.”
