Former MP Munyagwa and Four Others Remanded to Prison over Land Fraud

UGANDA, Wakiso Real Muloodi News | Former Kawempe South Division MP, Mubarak Munyagwa, along with four other individuals, have been remanded to Luzira prison following their arrest on charges of criminal trespass, malicious damage to property, and conspiracy to commit a felony.

Munyagwa and his alleged accomplices appeared before Kajjansi Chief Magistrate, Doreen Karungi, on Tuesday afternoon and pleaded not guilty to the charges. They have been remanded until June 12, when they will appear in court again.

The charge sheet reveals that the 44-year-old politician and businessman, along with Paddy Kabuye, Joweria Nakafero, Godfrey Buwembo, Isa Sekitoleko, and others still at large, allegedly entered upon the land belonging to Dechomai Asset Trust Number Three L.C.C to annoy the trust.

The incident is said to have occurred between May 26 and June 3, 2023, at Mutungo cell in Wakiso District, specifically on the land comprised in LRV 3839 Folio 20, Kyadondo Block 272 Plot 256.

According to the charge sheet, Munyagwa and his co-accused are also accused of willfully and unlawfully destroying cassava worth USh5 million in the garden owned by Janan Opio during the same period.

The other individuals involved in the case include Paddy Kabuye, the chairman of LC1 Bugu Zone, Busabala Ward, Masajja Division in Wakiso District; Godfrey Buwembo, a 22-year-old student residing in Mirimu Zone, Ndejje Ward, Makindye Ssabagabo; Isa Sekitoleko, a 45-year-old casual labourer residing in Makindye central zone, Makindye Sabagabo; and Joweria Nakafeero, a 41-year-old resident of Masajja B Cell, Makindye Sabagabo, Wakiso District.

The charges against Munyagwa and his alleged accomplices include conspiracy to commit a felony, specifically criminal trespass on the mentioned land, as well as conspiring to commit malicious damage to property.

The arrests were conducted by officials from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, with the assistance of the police.

The individuals were briefly detained at Kajjansi Police Station before being brought before the court.

The case against Munyagwa and his co-accused will continue as they await further legal proceedings.
