UGANDA, Jinja | Real Muloodi News | The Uganda Tourism Board and Jinja City Authority have concluded plans to develop Jinja City as a gateway for tourism in Eastern Uganda.

UTB’s Tourism City Development Plans have marked the development of Jinja City as a gateway tourism city in the financial year 2022/2023.

The plans were concluded in a meeting held between the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), Jinja City Council officials and the private sector at Jinja City hall under the theme ‘showcasing Tourism Potential for Jinja City.’

The meeting was chaired by the acting Jinja Town Clerk John Gulooba Choli, and the UTB delegation led by the UTB chairperson Daudi Migereko, vice-chairperson Susan Muhwezi, directors, the management committee of the board and other participants all attended.

During the meeting, the stakeholders talked about the challenges faced by the tourism sector in the city. They also discussed the strategies to consider to reduce the problems ahead of the recovery of the tourism industry.

This came when UTB is profiling Entebbe, Kampala, and Jinja Cities to identify potential tourism sites and to discover tourism opportunities within them. UTB also aims at discovering potential investment areas and promoting them as potential tourist destinations.

The town clerk, Gulooba said that the tourism sector in Jinja and Busoga region faces many challenges, including, little government funding for tourism activities, inadequate tourism infrastructure and a lack of awareness of tourism products.

Daudi Migereko said that there is an immediate need to develop a sound maintenance program for key access roads to tourism hotspots such as Bridge Street and the source of the Nile.

He also said that there is a need to provide standard information to be shared by tour guides at the attraction sites for an exceptional tourism experience for travellers.

Ms Lilly Ajarova, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UTB, added that the Board had recruited three consultants to profile the cities, showcase the available tourism and investment opportunities and improve the existing services.

She also added that the tourism opportunities in Jinja City, such as adventure and cultural tourism, would position Uganda as a unique destination for life adventures.

She pointed out white water rafting, tubing, bungee jumping, cycling, horse riding and other thrilling sports tourism activities which are unique in Jinja City.

Jinja City sits on the banks of the River Nile, and it is Uganda’s second-biggest city. The town is multi-cultured and visited by various tourists worldwide who come to see where the Nile starts its 6,500km journey to the North.
