UGANDA, Wakiso | Real Muloodi News | The government has praised Kira residents in Wakiso District for donating part of their land without compensation to facilitate the tarmacking of three roads valued at USh59 billion.

Mayor Julius Mutebi Nsubuga of Kira Municipality announced that over 80 per cent of residents in Kiwatule, Najjera, and Buwate have signed consent forms for the construction of Mbogo-Cyprian Kizito Road (Kiwatule-Kira-Kiwologoma, 9 km) and Buwanju Road (Buwate-Kungu Road, 2.3 km).

The roads are part of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP), funded by the World Bank. This project does not include provisions for compensation.

“I want to thank all those residents who have given up their land to allow the project to resume; this shows you love development and you are going to benefit,” Nsubuga said at the contract signing ceremony for the road works held at Kira Municipal Council offices.

The contract was awarded to CHICO, a Chinese firm, expected to complete the road works within 18 months.

Municipal town clerk Benon Yiga reported that 95 per cent of affected residents have signed consent forms for the Buwate-Kungu (Biwanju) Road, while 79 per cent have signed for the Kiwatule-Kira-Kiwologoma Road.

“What we have been doing is engaging the affected people and so far, we are ready to go,” Yiga stated. He explained that the roads would be dual carriageways, allowing two vehicles to move simultaneously in each lane.

Mayor Nsubuga commended the councillors and local council leaders for persuading residents to sign the consent forms.

“Please, those residents of Bweyogerere who are still refusing to assent to the use of their land, the projects will be removed from your division, and given to other divisions,” he warned.

Minister of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs Minsa Kabanda, who presided over the contract signing, also praised the local leaders for ensuring the project’s success.

“We have waited for these road projects for long; we started in 2018 and now we have finally started. So I thank all the stakeholders,” she said.

Under the GKMA-UDP, Kira Municipality has been allocated USh286 billion, which will be used for constructing several access roads and upgrading markets and drainage systems.

In the second phase, the government plans to tarmac Kamuli-Baker-Naalya Road, Bweyogerere-Butto Road, and Azam-Makanga-Ntebetebe Road.
