Landlord Auctions Tenant’s Underwear Due to Rent Arrears

UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi NewsIn a unique and controversial turn of events, a Kenyan landlord has decided to auction off the underwear of his tenant to recover rent arrears.

Zachariah Sichenje Masika has instructed Nyaluoyo Auctioneers to put up 4 men’s and 4 female underwear for public auction.

The event, set to take place at the auctioneering company’s yard in Kisumu, has received widespread attention from the public, with citizens poking fun at the auctioneering company and the landlord over the peculiar advert.

The terms of sale for the underwear auction are cash at the fall of the hammer. The notice, which was published in local dailies on January 30, 2023, has since gone viral and sparked debates on social media.

This embarrassing incident is not the first of its kind in the region of East Africa, with similar auctions taking place in Uganda due to rent arrears.

Landlords in Uganda regularly take measures to recoup their rent arrears by auctioning off tenants’ personal belongings, although it is usually items such as furniture and electronics, as opposed to undergarments.

In some cases, entire homes have been sold to recover owed rent, highlighting the serious consequences of not paying rent on time.

The case of Zachariah Sichenje Masika serves as a warning to tenants everywhere to stay on top of their rent payments and avoid such embarrassing situations.
