UGANDA | Bundibugyo | Real Muloodi News | Cracks have emerged on land and in houses in more than 30 villages in Bundibugyo District, threatening the lives of more than 2,000 households if they result in landslides.

The affected areas, including Bundikeki, Nyagilo, Katumba, Bundimulagya, and Bundibuturo, have asked authorities to relocate locals in the affected parishes, however so far their requests for intervention have been in vain.

Area leaders have written several letters to the district leadership to establish why the cracks are developing on their land.

The Kirumya Sub-County has also reported cases of landslides that destroyed cocoa, coffee, and vanilla plantations and gardens.

The sinking of the land has so far affected 33 villages in five parishes in the Kirumya Sub-County, with 2,000 households and a population of 14,118 people.

Landslides in the sub-county have displaced more than 200 households since September last year. People’s houses have also started developing cracks, with the road from Bundibugyo Town connecting Katumba to Bubukwanga now unmotorable.

Mr Matayo Kabundu, a district councillor representing Kirumya Sub-County, said that more cracks are emerging every other day, and they are deep, which means soon the land will continue to sink.

He cited the example of another landslide that occurred in Mutoma Cell in Bundibugyo Town Council, which destroyed cocoa plantations on Monday, 24th April 2023.

Locals express panic and fear as they do not know what is causing their land to keep sinking, which means they cannot plant any food or cash crops anymore. They appeal to the government for answers and help from well-wishers.

The Bundibugyo District disaster focal person, Mr Zakayo Kisungu, has asked the office of the Prime Minister (OPM) for intervention, but they are yet to receive their response.

The lawmaker from the affected area has also not yet responded. As a result, Mr Kisungu said he would remind the OPM and the area MP of the need for urgent intervention in the affected areas in Bundibugyo.
