UGANDA, Kisoro | Real Muloodi News | Local Government Minister Raphael Magyezi has issued a stern warning to urban authorities, cautioning them against the unauthorised selling of public land.

Speaking at the 58th Urban Authorities Association of Uganda (UAAU) annual general assembly in Kisoro District, Magyezi expressed concern over the increasing trend of selling public land and urged officials to refrain from such practices.

Magyezi emphasised the potential legal consequences for urban authorities engaging in the unauthorised sale of public land, urging quick intervention by reporting any such activities to the ministry.

He highlighted the importance of preserving public land for essential purposes like parks, recreation grounds, and schools.

Addressing leaders in non-coded newly created town councils, Magyezi requested the submission of matters to his office for assessment by ministry technocrats. This directive, however, applies exclusively to operationalising previously established administrative units.

In light of the government’s ban on the creation of new administrative units, Magyezi discouraged leaders from allowing councils to propose the establishment of such units.

His remarks were prompted by a recent heated debate at the Kisoro District Council concerning the creation of Bukimbiri District.

Urban Authorities Association of Uganda President Dr Wilson Sanya urged Magyezi to follow up on the presidential pledge of USh500 million annually for the association, emphasising the need for financial support to fulfil their roles in urbanisation and industrialisation for the socio-economic transformation of Uganda.
