UGANDA, Mbarara | Real Muloodi News | Nahurira Danson, a credit officer at Post Bank in Mbarara, has been arrested and remanded on charges of abuse of office and receiving an inducement of USh500,000.

The arrest was made by the Anti-Corruption Court in collaboration with the Uganda Police. Nahurira is accused of fraudulent processing and issuing financial cards to individuals, charging them USh1.2 million for the cards.

These cards enable people with loans from one bank to acquire loans from other banks.

Nahurira appeared before Magistrate Esther Asiimwe at the Anti-Corruption Court in Kololo. He was charged with abuse of office, as he allegedly abused his authority while working as a credit officer at Post Bank Uganda.

The charges, sanctioned by the Director of Public Prosecutions Jane Frances Abodo, state that Nahurira irregularly received USh500,000 as an inducement for issuing a financial card to Detective Sgt Samuel Liwa without following the proper processes.

Nahurira pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him. Gertrude Apio, the prosecutor, informed the court that investigations are still ongoing.

As a result, Nahurira was remanded to Luzira prison until Friday, June 23, 2023. If he wishes to apply for bail, he has been advised to provide sureties with the required documentation, including a national identity card and introduction letters from the local council.

The State House Anti-Corruption Unit received information from a whistleblower regarding Nahurira’s activities.

The whistleblower revealed that Nahurira had been soliciting money ranging from USh1 million to 2 million in exchange for issuing financial cards to individuals with existing loans, enabling them to obtain additional loans from various financial institutions.

This fraudulent practice has allegedly resulted in the loss of billions of shillings. Acting on the information, authorities set a trap and apprehended Nahurira with the marked money.

Nahurira was initially released on police bond, with instructions to report to the police. However, he was summoned to appear at the central police station in Kampala on Friday 16 June 2023, where he was subsequently arrested and taken to court for plea-taking.

The case against Nahurira will continue as investigations progress, shedding light on the extent of the fraudulent activities and their impact on Post Bank and other financial institutions.
