NHCC Seeks USh.1.5 Trillion to Put up Model Estates in New Cities

A well planned community. Organised housing is an important aspect in streamlining cities in Uganda.

UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | National Housing and Construction Corporation has requested Parliament to allocate USh 300 billion annually for the next five years (USh 1.5 trillion) to establish well planned, standard housing estates in the newly approved cities.

While addressing the Members of Parliament on the Infrastructure Committee, the NHCC chief executive officer, Eng Kenneth Kaijuka, said the USh 300 billion would set model housing estates with sufficient standards in the new cities.

“All the infrastructure investments government is undertaking lead into housing. Investments in electricity, water, roads and industrial parks, all lead to housing, and if we can organise housing, the benefits may not be physical, but [in extension to] utilities,” Eng. Kenneth Kaijuka said.

Mr Kaijuka said organised housing was an important aspect of streamlining cities in Uganda. Traffic jam, crime, and large or multiple slums characterise many cities because of their unplanned nature.

Uganda continues to face challenges with unplanned housing, characterised by high-rise perimeter walls, difficult access, and limited utility access, among others.

The challenge of unplanned housing has been growing over time, exacerbated by rapid expansion in population numbers.

According to Mr Kaijuka, as Uganda strives to achieve middle-income status, it must focus more on resolving housing challenges.

According to the Parliamentary Infrastructure Committee chairperson, Mr David Karubanga, through visits to various housing estates in Kampala, Parliament sought to familiarise the MPs with the housing industry’s difficulties and lay the groundwork for housing reform.
