Police Arrest Suspected Killers of Kikuube LC1 Chairperson

UGANDA, Kikuube Real Muloodi News | Police in Kikuube and Masindi districts have arrested four suspects believed to be connected to the the murder of Kikuube LC1 chairperson, Julius Nyaika Irumba.

The suspects are Richard Nyaika, 38, who is the brother of the deceased and a resident of Bweyale in Kiryandongo district, Stephen Aliganyira, 32, a resident of Bucunga Village in Hoima City,  Vincent Wabyona, 27, a resident of Kiryatete Village in Hoima City, and Angella Katusabe.

A police source, who preferred to remain anonymous, said the suspects were arrested in the districts of Kiryandongo, Masindi, Hoima, and Kikuube.

The four suspects have been remanded to police custody in Masindi district for their alleged involvement in the murder.

The Murder

The brutal murder of Julius Irumba, 43, who was the Musaijamukuru village LC1 chairperson in the Buhimba sub-county, occurred Thursday October 20, 2022.

Mr Irumba, who is also a lorry driver operating out of Hoima, was hired by unknown persons to transport sand and aggregate stones to Masindi on Wednesday October 19.

However, when Mr Irumba and his turn boy, Joseph Gubaza, reached Kinyaya Sugar Plantation the following day, they were stopped by a group of unknown people who blocked the road, while others emerged from the sugar cane plantation at Kasoingoire village in Bujenje county, Masindi district.

The assailants were armed with a panga, a knife, and a hammer, and reportedly slit Mr Irumba’s neck and hacked him to death. His lifeless body was found dumped in the tipper lorry he used to transport the sand and aggregate.

Joseph Gubaza, was beaten into a coma and rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital in a critical condition, where he continues to remain.

Amlan Tumusiime, Kikuube Resident District Commissioner (RDC), believes that Mr Irumba was killed because of a land wrangle.

The Arrest

The police source says the suspects approached a doctor at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital and offered him a deal to kill Gubaza by lethal injection.

According to the source, the doctor pretended to have accepted the deal, however instead informed security. After which, Security laid a trap that led to the arrest of the suspects.

Albertine region Police spokesperson Julius Hakiza said following Irumba’s murder, Flying Squad Unit operatives were dispatched to track down the suspects, which led to the arrest of the four.

He added that the suspects are locked up at Masindi Central Police Station pending interrogations, and that Police are still hunting their accomplices.
