UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | Uganda Revenue Authority Commissioner General John Musinguzi Rujoki has spelled out what he called a reset for the URA, with a revised vision, mission and core values, according to NTV News. He was speaking during a recent award ceremony for commercial banks for their strategic partnership in revenue collection.

The engagement with the bank, through which 94% of all revenue is collected, had a very strong focus on technology for the future. Mr Musinguzi Rujoki spoke about how the URA’s use of new technology will make tax paying more inclusive.

“We are re-setting our efficiency in delivery of service. Getting a TIN should not be a very difficult task, we want to simplify that. Making your tax contribution should not be a cumbersome task,” Mr Musinguzi added.

The Uganda Revenue Authority has devised a means of simplifying the way taxpayers can access the tax system over their smart phones from the comforts of their homes, business or work places.

The Commissioner General said: “The customer is king; the taxpayer is king, who we humbly serve. So we are re-engaging our taxpayers, we are listening to them more, we want to understand their business so that as we support them as they support us in revenue collection.”

Stories of taxpayer harassment, and even extortion, are not uncommon. Even for the Commissioner General, he knows his work is cut out to deliver URA on a different footing. On the matter, he said:

“Integrity is number one, we cannot do this assignment without clean hands, so our staff are committing themselves to the journey of integrity, the journey of professionalism, acting on time, acting professionally, acting with courtesy.”

Recently, a slew of solutions, including digital tax stamps, an Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System, and a Rental Tax Compliance System, have been introduced to broaden and deepen tax collecting avenues.

Another of the Commissioner General’s priorities is tax education, expected to be done to levels URA has never reached before.
