120 Arcade Owners Summoned for Failure to Meet COVID-19 SOPs

UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | Hon. Kyofatogabye Kabuye, Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, has called for intensified operations on arcades after disappointing inspections revealed failure to follow SOPs in Kampala Central division.

During his address to the Nation on 30th July 2020, H.E. President Museveni issued a directive that arcades and other business centres open on condition they fulfil specific measures and strict compliance with all SOPs. Shopping arcades and malls in Kampala started opening the first week of August under this directive.

Government established a team to vet city traders to ensure adherence to the guidelines. Kampala Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Hudu Hussein, who doubles as the security head in the capital, named agencies involved in the monitoring exercise, “Police, ISO, CMI, Health Monitoring Uganda, Kampala Capital City Authority, officials from the Ministry of Trade, and officials from the Ministry of Health are the ones leading the compliance team,” he said.

The principal areas of compliance that the inspectors have been monitoring include structural status of the buildings, screening areas, social distancing arrangements, management-related issues, waste management, water, sanitation and hygiene.

Minister Kabuye has confirmed the summoning of 120 Arcade owners in Kampala Central on Monday, for failure to meet the set standards.

Inspections Ongoing

Government, through Kampala Metropolitan Affairs Ministry, will continue its operations on Arcades in other divisions of Kampala.

Inspections will begin in Makindye to Lubaga, Kawempe and Nakawa on Monday (August 16, 2021) by the KCCA enforcement team, ISO, Military Police and the Police.

Minister Kyofatogabye Kabuye said the inspection exercise is aiming at identifying buildings that are non-compliant with rules to curb the spread of deadly COVID-19, in line with the president’s directives.
