UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | The Engineers’ Registration Board (ERB) has taken decisive action against 34 of its members for non-compliance, removing their names from the register of engineers. This move, announced by Eng Ronald Namugera, the Board’s registrar, prohibits these engineers from practising practising in Uganda.
In a statement published in a local media outlet on March 25, the ERB emphasised its commitment to upholding professional standards and ensuring public safety.
Eng Namugera highlighted the legal basis for the action, citing Section 21(1) of the Engineers Registration Act.
One of the affected engineers, Mr. Patrick Paddy Isagara, expressed surprise at his removal from the register, stating that he had not received any communication from the board regarding this matter.
He affirmed his intention to rectify the situation promptly to have his name reinstated.
Additionally, 56 temporary registered engineers have been blacklisted from practising in Uganda due to the expiration of their licenses.
Eng Namugera reiterated the Board’s stance on compliance, emphasising the need for engineers to renew their licenses annually.
The ERB has also instructed the Ministry of Internal Affairs to revoke any work permits issued to the barred individuals, underscoring the importance of regulatory oversight in safeguarding public welfare.
Furthermore, the Board has called for thoroughly verifying foreigners’ engineering credentials before granting work permits.
Mr. Joseph Tagane, the Clients Relations Officer at ERB, shed light on the rationale behind the deregistration, emphasising the obligation for engineers to maintain active subscriptions and stay abreast of technological advancements through continuous training.
The ERB’s decision comes in the wake of several construction-related tragedies in recent years, highlighting the importance of robust regulatory mechanisms in the engineering sector.
The different incidents of building collapses include; a storeyed building in Kabulengwa, Nansana Municipality in July 2021, the Fido Dido building collapse on Kampala Road in March 2021, and the Lukuli building collapse in May 2020 and many others.
