UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | The case involving officials from the Ministry of Karamoja, who are facing charges related to the diversion of iron sheets, was adjourned by the presiding chief magistrate at the Anti-Corruption Court upon the prosecution requesting more time to conclude their investigations.
Chief Magistrate Joan Aciro postponed the proceedings to June 15.
During the mention of the case, state attorney Jonathan Muwangaya requested the adjournment, stating that the prosecution required two more weeks to provide an update on the progress of their investigations.
“The matter is for mention and I have instructions to ask for an adjournment for two weeks when we shall be in position to tell court the progress,” state attorney Jonathan Muwangaya submitted.
Chief Magistrate Aciro granted the request and scheduled the next hearing accordingly.
Defence lawyer Jude Byamukama made a request to Chief Magistrate Aciro, seeking to have the case file forwarded to the High Court.
However, Aciro declined the request, stating that it is the High Court itself that should make such a request, not the defence lawyer directly contacting her court.
“The right procedure the lawyer would have used is to write to the Deputy Registrar,” Aciro guided.
Karamoja Affairs Minister Mary Goretti Kitutu is facing two counts of corruption and one count of conspiracy to defraud, along with Joshua Abaho, a senior assistant secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM).
The defence lawyer argued that Kitutu’s younger brother, Michael Naboya Kitutu, who is charged with receiving stolen property, should be charged in Mbale City rather than Kampala.
Other suspects involved in the iron sheets scandal who have been charged include Junior Karamoja Affairs Minister Agnes Nandutu and State Minister for Planning Amos Lugoloobi.
