UGANDA, Rwampara | Real Muloodi News | The Uganda Land Commission (ULC) is currently facing a debt of USh1.5 billion, according to Augustine Bujara, the acting secretary representing the Chairperson of the Commission.

Bujara revealed this during an event where the commission distributed 2539 land titles in the Rwampara District.

The Land Commission has utilised the Land Fund to acquire over 500 square miles of land from areas such as Kakumiro, Rwampara, and Mbarara districts, amounting to over USh250 billion.

However, only USh100 billion have been paid, resulting in a debt of USh150 billion.

Bujara appealed to members of parliament and the Minister of Land to strengthen and increase the Land Commission’s budget. This would enable the commission to pay off the debt and continue acquiring land and issuing land titles to legitimate individuals.

Despite the financial constraints, the Land Commission has managed to process and distribute over 10,000 land titles across the country.

Minister of Lands Judith Nabakooba, in response to the land title distribution in Rwampara District, cautioned residents about the risks of multiple interests in small pieces of land. This can lead to fragmentation and reduced productivity.

She also highlighted the government’s efforts to acquire 523 square miles of land, which has been allocated to the people to prevent illegal evictions.

Rwampara East Member of Parliament Michael Tusiime urged the public to be cautious of fraudsters and money lenders.

Instead, he encouraged them to take advantage of government programs and seek loans from commercial banks with low-interest rates. This would provide a safer and more reliable means of financing land-related activities.
