UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | Government will give all those who fall under the vulnerable category Shs100,000 COVID-19 relief cash.
On June 30, the government started registering the expanded 16 identified vulnerable groups eligible to receive the relief cash. Registration of beneficiaries is being conducted by officials of Uganda Bureau of Statistics (Ubos) and town clerks.
Disbursement of the funds is expected to start within the next two weeks. According to the Ministry of Finance, the total budget for relief is earmarked at Shs53 billion.
At least 500,000 households will benefit from the government stimulus fund for COVID-19, aimed at sustaining the vulnerable during lockdowns.
While re-imposing stringent lockdown measures, President Yoweri Museveni directed the Prime Minister of Uganda, Robinah Nabbanja, to work out modalities of helping the most vulnerable people affected by the lockdown.
During a press briefing at her office, the Prime Minister announced they would give out cash through mobile money instead of food. Nabbanja said:
“We have decided that any support that will be provided to the persons most affected by the lockdown will be through cash tokens and not physical food distribution.”
According to Nabbanja, to ensure they are only distributing money to vulnerable people, those with mobile phones are required not to have received more than Shs500,000 via a mobile money transaction before. Those without mobile phones will receive their money through a voucher.
At a press conference at Uganda Media Centre (UMC) on June 29, Minister Amongi said individuals eligible to get the Covid money, but whose National Identity cards and SIM card registration details vary, will receive pay through Post Bank.
“Post Bank vans shall be able to reach all those who do not have mobile money [accounts]. These will be moving in all cities and municipalities to deliver cash to beneficiaries,” Ms Amongi said.
