Kamuli 85-year-old Widow Faces Imminent Eviction Amidst Land Dispute

UGANDA, Kamuli Real Muloodi NewsIn the heart of Ginnery Zone, Balawoli Town Council, Kamuli District, an 85-year-old widow, Betty Nakaima, confronts the threat of eviction from her modest mud and wattle hut.

The predicament arises from a dispute over family land, reportedly sold off by relatives after her husband’s passing a decade ago.

The land, claimed by the late husband’s relatives who assert entitlement due to suspicions surrounding his death, was partially sold.

The current landowner in Kamuli has now issued an eviction notice, demanding the widow Nakaima and her sister vacate the premises by next week.

Ms. Kekulina Naisanga, 87, Nakaima’s sister and caregiver, highlighted the family’s struggle, starting with the loss of their children and intensifying with the husband’s demise. The relatives’ actions have left the elderly duo with limited options, facing the prospect of homelessness.

The National Forum of People Living with HIV/Aids Network Uganda (NAFOPHANU) drew attention to Nakaima’s plight as emblematic of the broader challenges faced by vulnerable individuals in land disputes.

The lack of familial support, coupled with the imminent threat of eviction, underscores the urgent need for intervention.

Stephen Salamuka, the chairperson of People Living with HIV/Aids in the Kamuli and Buyende districts, emphasised the necessity of community support to address the looming eviction.

As awareness grows about Nakaima’s situation, there is hope that concerted efforts can be mobilised to provide the crucial assistance needed to secure her right to a stable and dignified living situation.
