UGANDA, Tororo | Real Muloodi News | The government has initiated the construction of 12 warehouses in Tororo District, representing an investment of USh11.3 billion, aimed at bolstering storage infrastructure in the country.
Managed by Uganda Property Holdings Limited (UPHL), a government-owned entity, these storage facilities are strategically positioned to address the pressing need for storage solutions, particularly in the agricultural sector.
The constrution of these warehouses aims at recouping at least USh1.5 billion annually in profit through rent, which adds to the funds raised from other government properties in Mombasa (Kenya), the United Kingdom and other countries.
According to Mr. Wilbert Mugume, the Managing Director of UPHL, the construction of these warehouses is a response to the storage challenges outlined in the National Development Plan III report.
Mr. Mugume emphasised the critical role of adequate storage in enhancing post-harvest handling and ensuring the quality of agricultural products for both local consumption and export markets.
“These warehouses serve as a vital component in addressing the post-harvest handling issues faced by our farmers, thereby improving the marketability of agricultural products,” Mr. Mugume stated.
Additionally, he highlighted plans to relocate these warehouses to different regions across the country, facilitating broader access to storage facilities for farmers nationwide.
Moreover, the government’s investment in warehouse infrastructure reflects its commitment to stimulating economic growth and development.
State Minister of Finance (Investment and Privatisation), Ms. Evelyn Anite, hailed UPHL’s initiative as a testament to the government’s capacity to engage in profitable ventures.
Ms. Anite remarked, “The investment by UPHL demonstrates that the government can successfully conduct business ventures and generate profits.” She further advocated for the replication of such storage facilities in every region of the country to alleviate storage challenges faced by farmers.
The establishment of these warehouses not only addresses immediate storage needs but also aligns with broader economic objectives outlined in the National Development Plan.
By investing in storage infrastructure, the government aims to enhance agricultural productivity, promote food security, and bolster the competitiveness of Uganda’s agricultural sector in both domestic and international markets.
