UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | Constructors adhering to building guidelines will be recognised by the National Building Review Board (NBRB), aiming to encourage compliance across the industry.

NBRB, a government entity responsible for monitoring construction-related developments, will issue the awards. This initiative follows a revelation by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (Ubos) that only 22% of buildings in Uganda, monitored by NBRB, meet building standards.

Speaking at the award launch, acting NBRB Executive Secretary Eng. Anthony Rucukye stated the motive is to promote adherence to the building control regulatory framework.

“NBCA awards shall recognise players who have either developed technologies, made significant improvements on existing technologies, or adopted existing technologies into their operations,” Rucukye said.

He added, “It shall also recognise those who have incorporated sustainability parameters such as energy efficiency, sustainable materials, natural ventilation and lighting, green spaces, water efficiency, and waste reduction and recycling in their processes.”

The awards process will begin with an online voting phase, opened to the public and participating entities on July 17, 2024.

The online voting will last for two months, ending on September 17, 2024, followed by data analysis, shortlisting, and field verification by a team of independent experts.

Final winners will be announced at a grand awarding ceremony on December 6, 2024.

The awards, themed “Building for Sustainability,” will involve a participatory approach, allowing stakeholders to nominate potential winners from specific categories.

Award categories include Class A, B, and C, the Building Committee Award, the Building Control Officer Award, the Building Contractors Award, and the Building Materials Manufacturer’s Award.
