UGANDA, Mbarara | Real Muloodi News | New developments have emerged in the Mbarara land case involving Victoria Ariau Kabatoraine, a resident of Lubiri Cell, Nyamityobora Ward in Mbarara City South Division. The incident gained attention after a viral video showed Kabatoraine being dragged through the mud by plainclothes police officers.
The dispute revolves around land allegedly inherited by Kabatoraine from her late father, Leonard Bolya Aryaho. Her daughter, Marium Anena, said Kabatoraine has been fighting for the land for over 15 years amid multiple claims from others who allegedly seek to evict her.
“Mummy has been fighting for the land for 15 years. The land is for her parents, but many people have come around claiming it,” Anena stated.
According to Anena, the land was divided equally among Leonard Aryaho’s children before his death. However, she alleges that one of the siblings, Monica Aryaho, sold her portion but now claims ownership of Kabatoraine’s share. Anena further accused Monica Aryaho’s associate, Denis Kajungu, of using police officers to forcefully evict her mother.
On Friday, the Rwizi Regional Police Disciplinary Court recommended the dismissal of four officers captured in the viral video for their role in the alleged harassment. The implicated officers include ASP Andrew Betunga, who commanded the operation, and constables Darious Aharizira, Hope Nsasirwe, and Loyce Kiboneka.
The officers’ case has been transferred to the Mbarara Magistrate’s Court, where they will face charges of torture.
Anena claims that this is not the first incident involving threats and harassment. “Three months ago, an unidentified man with a panga attacked the home, but when we reported to police, nothing was done,” she said.
Kabatoraine reiterated her position, stating, “This land was purchased by my late father, Bolya Leonard, and shared among his children. Kajungu and Monica have no rightful claim to it.”
Attempts to contact Denis Kajungu for comment were unsuccessful, as he reportedly disconnected the call upon learning it was a journalist.
