UGANDA, Kalungu | Real Muloodi News | On Monday, August 23, 2021, the construction of a 2 Billion Shillings water project began. This project will provide clean and safe piped water to Kalungu District. Engineer Silver Mugisha, anticipates the project will provide safe water for up to 10,000 residents of the district.

Before the water project, the citizens of Kalungu relied on swamps or shallow wells for their water. The water used by villagers in the rural parts of the district is often also used by wildlife and livestock and poses health risks if consumed by human beings.

Isa Buyondo and Suleiman Ssembatya, residents of Kalungu, said their water often contains contaminants from animals or mud. Residents added that water was a long distance away, which was not safe for their children, who are often responsible for fetching water for households.

The executive director of National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), Silver Mugisha, said he expects to complete the project in two years.

The project will serve Bukulula, Lwabenge, and Kalungu town council.

Mugisha also said plans are underway to find other access to safe water to other areas around Kalungu.

Kalungu LCV chairperson, Ahmed Nyombi Mukiibi, asked the government to expand the reach of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation’s operations, so that other districts may also benefit from access to clean water.

Mr Mugisha said there are plans for expansion and that the corporation will improve capacity to meet rural Ugandans’ need for clean water.

Kalungu District is in central Uganda, and it has a border with Mpigi and Masaka districts. Kalungu has an estimated population of 177,000 people.

Over 21 million Ugandans, that is 51 per cent of the population, lack access to safe and clean drinking water for domestic use, according to the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Program website.
