UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | In January 2022, Kampala Capital City Authority will start the signalisation of at least 30 junctions in Kampala city, to control traffic flow into the city.
Mr Justus Akankwansa, the KCCA director of engineering and technical services, said they might also construct a traffic control centre to monitor the flow.
According to Mr Akankwansa, the Japanese government gave the Ugandan government a grant worth USh 89 billion towards the improvement of junctions.
“Improving traffic control will encourage wider economic effects and bring orderliness on the city roads. KCCA is grateful to the government of Japan and appreciates residents of Kampala for owning and supporting the development of city infrastructure,” Mr Akankwansa said.
The project comes when Kampala City is experiencing a traffic mess, especially during rush hours.
At least 12 junctions already have traffic lights and push buttons for pedestrians.
The signalisation of junctions was part of the Kampala Institutional and Infrastructural project (KIIDP-2) second phase.
KIIDP-2, a five-year World Bank initiative, started in 2015 to improve the mobility and drainage system in the city. The project was expected to be completed by next month.
The signalised junctions will have traffic sensors to find out the traffic load to regulate the flow of cars within the city.
Makerere Hill Road, Fairway, three junctions on Kira Road, Bwaise-Mambule intersection on Mambule Road, and three junctions on Hoima Road at Bakuli – Nakulabye portion are among the four signalised junctions under the KIIDP-2 project.
Mr Akankwansa further said the other two major projects, the Greater Kampala Urban Development programme and the Kampala City Annuity Roads and Bridge project, are scheduled.
The Greater Kampala Urban Development programme, a five-year project, is scheduled to start from 2022 to 2027. The USh 917b project will serve Kampala, Wakiso, Entebbe, and Mukono.
The UK government will bankroll the Kampala City Annuity Roads and Bridges project for $250m. The project will renew 270km of severely worn roads.
The Kampala City Annuity Roads and Bridges project will construct four flyover bridges for pedestrians and one key bridge for vehicles.
The Greater Kampala Urban Development programme aims at improving mobility, employment, accessibility and connectivity, disaster risk management and resilience, institutional support and systems development, plus slum upgrading and low-cost housing.
