UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | Café Javas, better known as CJs owned by a Ugandan entrepreneur and tycoon Ahmed Omar Mandela, has emerged as a prominent restaurant chain in Uganda as well as Nairobi, drawing a diverse clientele, including the middle and working-class Ugandans and Kenyans.

With its rapid rise, it has become a notable competitor to established giants like KFC, Cafesserie in Uganda and JAVA, Kilimanjaro, and Artcafe in Kenya.

Let’s delve into the business life of Ahmed Omar Mandela, who is behind the success of CJs, shedding light on his business empire and ventures.

Ahmed Omar Mandela is a well-known entrepreneur and one of Uganda’s wealthiest and most influential individuals, hailing from Kampala.

He is the Founder of the Mandela Group of Companies, a conglomerate with diversified interests in hospitality, oil, manufacturing, and the automotive sector.

Beyond his business endeavours, Ahmed Omar Mandela also serves as the President of Sports Club Villa (SC Villa), a prominent football club in Uganda and the East African Community.

The Genesis of Café Javas Restaurants

Café Javas, founded by Ahmed Omar Mandela through the Mandela Group of Companies, was established to revolutionise the hospitality industry in Uganda.

The inaugural Café Javas branch was situated on Bombo Road, adjacent to a City Oil petrol station and service area.

The restaurant aimed primarily at the middle and working classes, offering delectable meals at reasonable prices. Its quick success resulted in long queues of patrons eager to savour its offerings.

This popularity inspired the tycoon to gradually expand by opening additional branches across Kampala. Currently, the restaurant operates nine thriving branches in Uganda, with eight in Kampala and one in Entebbe.

Venturing into the Kenyan Market

Following Café Javas’ triumphant journey in Uganda, Ahmed Omar Mandela recognised the opportunity to expand his culinary empire to Kenya, the largest economy in East Africa.

However, entering the Kenyan market was no simple task. When the tycoon announced plans to establish a restaurant in Nairobi, they encountered a legal hurdle in the form of a court order issued by Kenya’s Java House.

Java House claimed that the name “Café Javas” posed a trademark infringement. To resolve this, Mandela rebranded the restaurant as CJ Restaurant.

In April 2018, CJs opened its first branch along Koinange Street in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD). Nairobians warmly embraced this newcomer, making it a go-to destination for dates, gatherings, and meetings.

Today, CJs boasts four branches in Nairobi, located along Koinange Street, at Village Market, in Kilimani, and The Waterfront Mall in Karen.

The restaurant is set to launch another branch along Mombasa Road by year-end, further solidifying its presence in the Kenyan culinary scene.
