UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | In a dramatic turn of events earlier this week, notorious land criminal Yusuf Ssemakula engaged in a violent confrontation with law enforcement officers during his arrest in Munyonyo, a high-end suburb of Kampala.
Ssemakula, known for his alleged involvement in multiple land-grabbing activities in the city, opened fire on police officers from the Crime Intelligence (CI) unit, creating a tense and dangerous situation.
The incident unfolded on Monday, November 6th, 2023, as Ssemakula, who had been on a wanted list, faced arrest over charges related to threatening the life of a city businesswoman.
The businesswoman had accused Ssemakula of grabbing her property and defrauding her of USh1.4 billion. Despite her attempts to seek justice being thwarted by several police offices in Kampala, she found an ally in Director CI Brig Christopher Damulira.
Investigations revealed that Ssemakula had influential connections within the top echelons of the police establishment, who turned a blind eye to his illicit activities.
A source disclosed that Ssemakula had almost bought the loyalty of numerous police officers, paying school fees for their children, providing them with new cars, and renting lavish apartments.
Undeterred by these connections, Brig Damulira, a no-nonsense UPDF officer, authorised Ssemakula’s arrest to ensure justice for the aggrieved businesswoman.
The suspect, evading authorities for an extended period, showed a blatant disregard for the law by resorting to gunfire during the arrest.
Eyewitnesses recounted a chaotic scene as Ssemakula fiercely resisted arrest, firing shots at the police officers. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
CI operatives swiftly responded, deploying additional units to contain the escalating violence. Ssemakula was eventually arrested, and an attempted murder charge was filed against him at Kabalagala Police Station.
On Wednesday, Ssemakula was arraigned before the Kira Chief Magistrates Court on charges of malicious damage to property.
The allegations stemmed from an incident between December 14th and 28th, 2022, in Buloli Namugongo-Kira division, Wakiso District, where the accused maliciously destroyed property belonging to 99-year-old Namazzi Helena.
Ssemakula has been remanded until November 14th, 2023, as further investigations are underway in connection with other cases.
