UGANDA, Luweero | Real Muloodi News | Authorities in Bbale Village, Luweero District, are investigating the death of an 89-year-old woman, Yowanina Nalujja, following a dispute over a land sale.
The incident reportedly involved two siblings and two grandchildren as accomplices.
Local reports suggest the four suspects assaulted Nalujja on April 26, ultimately leading to her death.
The suspects attempted to rush Nalujja to a clinic, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Police in Luweero have arrested the suspects.
Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twineamazima confirmed the arrests.
“We have arrested the four suspects on a charge of murder by assault. Preliminary investigations reveal that the four assaulted the 89-year-old woman to death while demanding money she had received after selling a piece of land,” Twineamazima said on Sunday.
Nalujja’s body was transferred to the City Mortuary in Kampala for an autopsy.
Local Council Secretary for Defense Edward Ssenyonga Tamukedde said the suspects previously claimed Nalujja sold a plot of land without consulting them.
“We are still shocked at the sad news because Nalujja has been a calm elderly woman who sold her own property (land), a few days ago. The sad news is that they took the law into their own hands,” Tamukedde said on Sunday.
According to Tamukedde, the suspects locked Nalujja inside a house before assaulting her. They demanded she hand over money from the land sale.
The suspects then took Nalujja to a clinic at Bbowa Village, where she collapsed.
Resident Helen Nabakooza mentioned that Nalujja had been facing growing pressure from her children to surrender her land due to her advanced age.
Land disputes account for over 80% of cases at the Resident District Commissioner’s office in Luweero District, according to RDC Richard Bwabye.
He says that many of these cases involve conflicts among relatives over suspected land grabbing and illegal land transactions.
