Building Collapse at Kampala Restaurant Leaves One Dead, Several Injured

UGANDA, Jinja | Real Muloodi News | A building collapse at a restaurant in Kampala has left one person dead and several others injured.

The incident took place in the evening of Sunday, April 16 at Loi Lang Restaurant, a South Sudanese near Kampala International University (KIU). Tragedy struck  as South Sudanese nationals had gathered to watch an English Premier League match between West Ham United and Arsenal.

Upon being alerted of the collapse, the police, fire prevention, and rescue services, along with members of the Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) and a team of detectives, rushed to the scene. Rescue workers combed through the rubble in search of any other survivors, as an investigation was launched.

“A preliminary investigation has revealed that the building had an extension of a story structure with two floors. All of the victims were South Sudanese and the restaurant was also for South Sudanese,” Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire said in a statement.

One of the victims died on arrival at Mulago Hospital, while four others are receiving treatment there. Police are investigating the cause of the collapse.

Uganda has seen several building collapses in recent years, and most have been attributed to poor construction practices and a lack of compliance with building codes.

The government has stepped up its efforts to curb the incidence of building collapses, with the KCCA recently announcing plans to demolish 30 substandard buildings in the city.

Uganda hosts thousands of South Sudanese nationals, not only as refugees but also those who go there to study at universities and the wealthy who buy houses in Kampala.
