UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | A Chinese construction company operating in Uganda is set to provide construction training for 32 Ugandans.
The initiative, organised by Wuhan City School and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), aims to equip participants with basic construction theory, practical construction techniques, and Chinese language proficiency to enhance their global employability.
At the event on Tuesday, CCCC’s general manager, Zhao Wei, emphasised the importance of local talent for the company.
He stated that this project is just the beginning of a larger effort to train local workers, with more similar initiatives planned globally in the future.
“Simultaneously, we have prepared training manuals and texts for our students. I trust that the inaugural session of this training project will be embraced by our students, enabling them to make significant contributions to our company and to the nation as a whole,” said Zhao Wei.
According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (Ubos), more than 70% of Uganda’s population is under the age of 35, making them the most affected by unemployment, economic stagnation, and poverty.
Fan Xuecheng, minister counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Uganda, highlighted the shortage of qualified and trained employees that companies often face.
He expressed hope that the training would empower Ugandan participants with valuable skills for the job market and accelerate Uganda’s development.
“China views vocational education as a vital component of its education and talent cultivation system. Since 2012, China has undertaken substantial efforts to reform this sector, leading to significant advancements in diversity, quality, and its contribution to social progress. This is the standard we hope Uganda can achieve,” said Xuecheng.
State Minister for Labour, Employment, and Industrial Relations, Esther Anyakun, thanked CCCC and the Chinese government for providing Ugandans with the opportunity to enhance their skills to international standards.
She emphasised the critical role of vocational training in Uganda’s workforce development.
“This initiative represents a significant milestone in our vocational training program, empowering our workforce with the skills required in the labour market,” said Anyakun.
She also noted that the training would benefit Ugandans by ensuring they acquire the necessary skills for self-reliance and sustainability, even if CCCC were to leave the country.
The minister encouraged other Chinese companies in Uganda to adopt a similar approach to training local employees.
China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) is a major state-owned enterprise engaged in designing and constructing transportation infrastructure, dredging, and heavy machinery manufacturing, among other activities.
