UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | The scarcity of registered engineers in Uganda, with only 1,800 professional engineers listed under the Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers (UIPE), is believed to be contributing to substandard construction practices across the country.
During the 4th annual World Engineering Day celebrations on Monday 4th March, 2024, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation Monica Musenero delivered a speech on behalf of Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.
Musenero highlighted the adverse effects of the limited number of registered engineers, stating, “This has resulted in too many informal sectors springing up and unprofessional practices, shoddy and poor quality of engineering goods, works, and services, emerging engineering disciplines, and alignment of engineering education.”
Addressing the challenges posed by this situation, Musenero emphasised the need for an improved policy and regulatory framework.
She called for the repeal of outdated laws and the enactment of new legislation to address the deficiencies in the current system.
Musenero further announced the government’s commitment to collaborating with key stakeholders, including the Engineers Registration Board and the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers, to review the Engineers Registration Act of 1969.
The aim is to undertake legislative action to address the existing gaps and enhance the regulation of engineering practices in the country.
Expressing concerns about the low number of registered engineers, stakeholders in the engineering field emphasised the need for urgent measures to bolster the profession’s integrity and quality standards.
The 4th annual World Engineering Day celebrations revolved around the theme “Engineering Solutions for a Sustainable World,” highlighting the pivotal role of engineering in addressing global challenges and promoting sustainability.
