UGANDA, Masaka | Real Muloodi News | A 25-year-old woman, Betty Nabalonge, was killed instantly when a dilapidated school perimeter wall collapsed on her in Mukudde Zone, Nyendo-Mukungwe Division, Masaka City

She was passing near Centenary High School on her way back from her sister’s home to charge her mobile phone when the dilapidated wall collapsed on her on Wednesday 29th March 2023 at around 10 am.

Joseph Bukenya, a school neighbour, said they had alerted the school administration about the poor condition of the wall, but no attention was given.

According to Yuda Ndyako, who was involved in the construction of the perimeter wall, they had asked the proprietor to provide them with hardcore stones to build a strong foundation, but they waited in vain.

After Nabalonge’s death, residents attempted to break down the remaining part of the wall, but the police dispersed them with tear gas.

The police spokesperson for the greater Masaka region, SP Twaha Kasirye, said the school proprietor will be charged with rash and negligent acts.

The Masaka City police are investigating the incident to determine the cause of the wall’s collapse. The body of the deceased was taken to Masaka regional referral hospital for postmortem.

Journalists attempted to speak with the school administrators but were ordered to leave the premises.
