UGANDA, Kabale | Real Muloodi News | Kabale Town residents were left in despair as a fire engulfed one of its commercial buildings, causing damage estimated to be worth millions of shillings.
Police authorities in Kabale have launched an investigation into the incident.
The affected building, situated on the Kabale Main Road opposite Kabale Central Market, housed two establishments: Tayebwa James Electronics and Designers Zone. The fire erupted on Saturday morning 18th May 2024 around 5 AM.
Fortunately, the prompt response of the police fire brigade team averted a more extensive catastrophe, as they managed to douse the flames before they consumed the entire structure.
However, the damage to the businesses within was already significant.
Kabale District Police Commander, Joseph Bakaleke, stated, “The cause of the fire is not yet determined, but police investigations have commenced to ascertain the exact circumstances. Several shop items were reduced to ashes.”
Gloria Aharikundira, the proprietor of the Designers Zone shop, suspects foul play, alleging that the fire was deliberately ignited by unidentified arsonists who tampered with the building structure before setting the shop ablaze.
She lamented the considerable financial loss incurred due to this malicious act, emphasizing the devastating impact on her business and livelihood.
Ms. Aharikundira’s assertion of arson echoes previous incidents in Kabale. In August 2019, five timber stores in Igabiro cell, Southern Division Kabale Municipality, were destroyed by fire.
Similarly, in August 2021, a blaze ravaged timber and workshop equipment along Kazooba Road in lower Bugongi Kabale town. In both instances, property owners suspected foul play, pointing to deliberate acts of arson as the cause of the fires.
