UGANDA, Kigezi | Real Muloodi News | The State Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Hon. David Bahati has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tarmac roads in the Kigezi Sub-region.

Minister Bahati said this during the assessment of roads worth USh 450bn to be worked upon by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), in the Kigezi sub-region. Old Kabale (20km), Katuna-Rubaya-Muko (67km), and Kabale-Lake Bunyonyi (15km) are among the roads that will be tarmacked (15km).

“Government has already secured funds for the construction and tarmacking of Old Kabale Road in Ndokwa East, Katuna-Rubaya-Muko Road and Kabale Lake Bunyonyi and the actual works shall begin after the completion of the procurement process that is currently going on,” Mr Bahati said.

Asked when the construction of the roads would begin, the minister said it would start after finalising the procurement process. Mr Bahati, however, did not disclose how much the roads would cost.

Hon. Bahati said that the government has already secured funds for the construction and tarmacking. The actual works shall begin after they complete the ongoing procurement process.

Minister Bahati believes that the road construction will transform the Kigezi region socioeconomically, especially in the Districts of Kabale and Rubanda, where 1.5 tonnes of iron ore deposits have yet to be mined.

The minister said that when the roads are completed, it will boost the tourism sector, hence the growth of economic transformation in the region.

He added the government plans to construct a hydroelectricity substation in the Kigezi Sub-region and an iron ore factory in Rubanda District.

Eng. Joseph Otim, the director in charge of road maintenance, assured Hon. Bahati that UNRA will work tirelessly to get the projects done within the time frame.

According to the Rubanda District Resident Commissioner Peter Rwakifari, such projects will ease accessibility and gear up tourism in the area.

Nyakahuma Godfrey, the Kabale District Resident Commissioner, said that besides constructing roads, the locals should give leaders and the government support to develop the area.

Mr Nyakahuma believes that people’s household income will improve after completing the road project and attract more tourists to the region.

Hon Bahati, who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Ndorwa East Kabale District, repeated the government’s commitment to providing two ferries and a speed boat for Lake Bunyonyi. He also mentioned that the acquisition process for the ferries is underway. The ferry service will save time and provide safer passage across Lake Bunyonyi for the community’s people when the ferry service begins.
