UGANDA, Masaka | Real Muloodi News | In a heartfelt gesture of compassion, Mathias Mpuuga, the outgoing Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Parliament, has made a significant impact by constructing houses for the elderly in Masaka City.

The Nyendo-Mukungwe lawmaker handed over three houses in the villages of Kiyimbwe and Kirumba, addressing a crucial need among vulnerable citizens.

Mpuuga, expressing disappointment in the government’s approach to caring for the elderly, emphasised the necessity for broader assistance.

He criticised the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE), pointing out that it currently benefits only those aged 80 and above, while civil servants retire at 60.

Advocating for a more inclusive system, he stressed that the government, funded by citizens’ taxes, holds the responsibility to care for its people.

During the handover ceremony, Mpuuga affirmed his commitment to serving his constituents with his resources.

Dismissing misconceptions about his financial capacity, he clarified that the funds were accounted for, and he had no authority to distribute them.

His dedication to the well-being of the elderly in Masaka resonated as he underscored the importance of addressing their housing needs.

Joining the event, Masaka City Woman Member of Parliament Juliet Kakande urged the youth to work hard to support their parents, emphasising the uncertainty of future leaders.

She also condemned local leaders involved in land grabbing from the elderly, emphasising the importance of safeguarding the rights of vulnerable citizens.

The beneficiaries of Mpuuga’s generosity shared their gratitude, highlighting the tangible impact on their lives.

Teddy Tushabe, expressing her thanks, revealed that part of her family land had been sold by her son, leaving her with a small piece.

Mpuuga’s intervention provided her with a home, safeguarding her from the fear of losing more.

Resty Nalwoga, another beneficiary, faced the challenges of a damaged house and found solace in Mpuuga’s support.

The wind had blown off her house rooftop, forcing her to sleep at her neighbour’s house. Mpuuga’s consideration provided her with a newfound sense of security and stability for herself and her grandchildren.

Mauricia Nalumansi, whose house was destroyed by a hailstorm, echoed sentiments of gratitude. Living with nine grandchildren, she expressed happiness and appreciation for Mpuuga’s intervention, which offered them a renewed sense of hope and a place to call home.

Mpuuga’s initiative not only addresses immediate housing needs but also brings joy and relief to the lives of those who have benefited from his compassion in Masaka.
