UGANDA, Nakaseke | Real Muloodi News | The government has initiated the rehabilitation of infrastructure within the Liao Shen Industrial Park, situated in Kapeeka, Nakaseke District, marking a significant step towards enhancing industrial development in the region.
State Minister for Investment, Evelyn Anite, announced the commencement of the project, which entails the upgrading of roads and the establishment of a water treatment facility within the park.
With an estimated budget of USh319 billion, the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to facilitating investment in various industrial zones nationwide.
During the inauguration of road works, Minister Anite highlighted the government’s investment policy, emphasising its pledge to allocate USh319 billion for infrastructure enhancements at Kapeeka Industrial Park.
Of this amount, USh179 billion is earmarked for road improvements, while USh138 billion is allocated for drainage and the construction of a wastewater treatment plant. The project is slated to span three years.
To kickstart the endeavour, the government has disbursed USh15 billion for activities such as road design, the opening of roads, drainage, and water infrastructure.
The execution of these works will be spearheaded by the UPDF Engineering Brigade, under the supervision of the Ministry of Works and Transport and the Ministry of Water and Environment.
Spanning over 2,500 acres of land in Kapeeka Sub-county, the industrial park currently hosts 26 factories engaged in various sectors, including ceramics, sanitary ware, leather, garments, agro-processing, electronics, construction, packaging, and fishnets.
Notably, it accommodates the largest ceramic and sanitary factory in the country, showcasing its pivotal role in driving industrialisation.
The initiative to revamp infrastructure at Kapeeka Industrial Park follows calls from various stakeholders, including the Parliament Committee on Trade, urging the government to fulfil its commitment to enhancing investment climates in industrial zones nationwide.
Acknowledging the importance of robust infrastructure, stakeholders emphasised the need for improved road networks and essential utilities to bolster industrial growth.
Moses Ssenfuma, the Chairperson of Kapeeka Sub-county, welcomed the infrastructure upgrade, citing its potential to alleviate transportation challenges currently faced by the industrial park.
He expressed gratitude towards the government for fulfilling its promise to facilitate the construction of better roads, which will undoubtedly enhance connectivity and efficiency within the park.
In addition to Kapeeka, similar infrastructure development initiatives are underway at other industrial parks across the country, including Mbale, Namanve, and Soroti in Eastern Uganda.
At Mbale Industrial Park, ongoing infrastructure works, totalling USh411 billion under a pre-financing contract, are jointly supervised by the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) and the Ministries of Works and Water and Environment. The project is being executed by China Railway Number 3 Group.
The commencement of infrastructure upgrades at Kapeeka Industrial Park reflects the government’s commitment to fostering industrialisation and economic growth in Uganda.
With concerted efforts aimed at enhancing essential facilities and utilities, industrial zones are poised to attract more investment, stimulate job creation, and propel economic development across the nation.
In 2021, the government initiated the construction of 25 industrial parks across various regions of Uganda, with three of these parks being privately owned.
