UGANDA, Hoima | Real Muloodi News | In a recent development, the Hoima District Local Government has recommenced maintenance works on over 18 kilometres of roads spanning three sub-counties.
Charles Kumakech Oluba, the Chief Administrative Officer of Hoima, shared this information during an interview at the district headquarters in Kasingo, Hoima City, on Wednesday, January 17.
The decision to resume road maintenance activities followed the cessation of rains, allowing for the commencement of crucial infrastructure projects.
Kumakech disclosed that the local government allocated an initial sum of USh250 million from the USh1 billion received from the central government in the last financial year (2023/24) for the first quarter’s road maintenance activities.
He highlighted the progress made in two sub-counties, Kabale and Kitoba, where significant road projects have been completed.
In the Kabale Sub-county, the 7-kilometer Kitegwa–Nzorobi–Ngemwa Road, with an estimated cost of USh87 million, has been completed.
Additionally, in the Kitoba Sub-county, the 3-kilometer Kiburwa–Rutoma Road, costing USh40 million, has been finalised.
Currently, the district is directing efforts towards the ongoing construction of the 5-kilometer Kihesi–Kababwa Road in the Kiganja Sub-county, with a budget of USh90 million.
The commencement of the road maintenance projects involved essential preliminary activities such as bush clearing, road shaping, spot gravelling, and the installation of culverts.
However, Kumakech mentioned a setback in the form of a breakdown of the district’s grader, which has posed a challenge to the overall progress of the road maintenance initiative.
Felix Ongirwth, the Secretary for Works and Production, provided insight into the inspection process that will follow the completion of the roads.
The works team is committed to ensuring that the executed projects align with the allocated funds, emphasising the importance of delivering value for money.
As the Hoima District local government focuses on enhancing and maintaining critical infrastructure, the road maintenance initiative demonstrates a commitment to improving the local transportation network.
The allocation of funds and the strategic allocation of resources underscore the importance placed on addressing the region’s infrastructure needs.
