The World Bank and the Ugandan Government are investing US$183.7 million in a project titled “The Second Kampala Institutional and Infrastructure Development Project (KIIDP2”). Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is implementing the project.

KCCA expects KIIPD2 will improve the infrastructure and institutional capacity of the Authority. The project will benefit five divisions in Kampala: Central, Nakawa, Makindye, Kawempe, and Rubaga.

KCCA explains two critical components of this project include “Widen, upgrade and construct city roads, junctions, drainages, and associated infrastructure,” and “Institutional and Systems development support which aims to strengthen the capacity of KCCA to deliver on its mandate.”

KCCA reports it has completed construction of the following roads and junctions:
  • Fairway junction, with one signalised traffic light junction.
  • Kabira junction, with one signalised traffic light junction.
  • Bwaise junctions, with one signalised traffic light junction.
  • A four-lane road at Kira, with two signalised traffic junctions.
  • A two-lane road at Mambule.
  • A four-lane road at Makerere Hill, with one signalised traffic light junction and one pedestrian crossing.
  • A four-lane road at Bakuli-Nakulabye-Kasubi, with three signalised traffic light junctions.

Despite the ongoing pandemic and lockdowns, construction work is continuing, according to KCCA. Roads are constantly being tarmacked, such as the Kulambiro ring road, and others are being prepared to be tarmacked.

KCCA is presently carrying out the following works:
  • Construction of Kulambiro Ring Road (including Najeera Link and Tuuba-Kyanja road) to include road signs and street light junctions
  • The casting of trenches for drainage, construction of inbuilt drains, and preparation for tarmacking at Kabuusu-Bunamwaya-Lweza, John Babiiha road (Acacia), Ntinda-Nakawa road, and Lukuli road.
Drainage

KIIDP2 has improved the Kampala Drainage Master Plan by designing drainage channels ready for construction. KCCA has planned a 65 km drainage system around Kampala through five key channels:

  • Lubigi channel
  • Kinawataka channel
  • Kansanga channel
  • Gaba channel
  • Nalukolongo channel
Other Achievements:
  • Development of the Multi-Modal Urban Transport Master plan is underway.
  • Automated registration for all properties and roads in the city is proceeding.
  • KCCA has now completed the naming of roads and various premises in the city.
  • The Revenue Management System, eCitie, is now working efficiently.
