UGNADA, Kyambogo | Real Muloodi News | The Kyambogo University land dispute took a new twist after Uganda Land Commission boss, Beatrice Byenkya Nyakaisiki, told Parliament that the Buganda Kingdom is the legal owner.
The Buganda Kingdom, Kampala District Land Board, and the Ministry of Education and Sports have all claimed ownership over the same land.
Both Kyambogo University and the Buganda Kingdom claim about 407 acres where the institution’s main campus in Banda is located. The Ministry of Education owns 10 acres. Kampala District Land Board owns 60 acres.
A month earlier, Prof Elly Katunguka, the Kyambogo University Vice-Chancellor, said that the university has a freehold title of 137.5 hectares of land that Uganda Land Commission issued to them. Prof Katunguka clarified that only 60 acres were being contested.
In 2019, Kabaka Ronald Mutebi wrote to the president over the same land. He claims to have inherited it from fore-parents. The president tasked the Prime Minister to handle the matter to compensate the claimant.
Byenkya told the Parliament’s Physical Infrastructure Committee that the land under contention belongs to the Royal Family of the Buganda Kingdom. Byenkya claimed Uganda Land Commission illegally allocated the land to the university in a freehold arrangement.
However, the Kampala District Land Board Chairperson, David Balondemu, told the committee that the land claimed by the Buganda Kingdom is not part of the land being claimed by the Kampala District Land Board. He also stressed the urgent need for resolving the dispute to allow Kampala Capital City Authority’s 2013-2023 Physical Development Plan implementation.
