Primary School Children Injured as Main Hall Collapses in Mayuge

UGANDA, Mayuge | Real Muloodi News | 10 Primary Seven Candidates at Luubu Primary School in Mayuge District were injured when the main hall collapsed on them on Friday.

48 Primary Seven students were having their primary leaver’s celebration on Friday, October 21, 2022, when the structure fell.

All of the students were found alive in the wreckage, however, ten needed immediate medical attention and were sent to Bukatuube Health Center III.

According to the LCII chairperson, David Mukobe Kalali, “They were dancing in the hall and the wall separating the two classrooms collapsed on them.”

“They sustained injuries on the heads, hands and all over the body,” he said, adding that they have been admitted at the facility.

A mother named Tapenensi Babirye claims that her 14-year-old son was injured on the head and was sent to Mayuge Health Center IV for additional treatment.

Babirye urged the administration of the school to guarantee that the school buildings be updated or replaced.

Mary Nakaziba, another parent, claims that her 12-year-old daughter had back wounds that needed to be stitched up. Nakaziba contends that the buildings ought to be torn down since they are decrepit.

The school will be temporarily closed for two days to clean the rubble, according to the head teacher Aisha Kawala.

According to Mukobe, the structure was exceedingly flimsy and old. He also stated that owing to its condition, the school’s administration had abandoned it.

“The building was dilapidated and in a bad state,” Mukobe said.

He claimed that it was built more than 30 years ago by the community.

At the time of the incident, Diana Nandawula, a spokeswoman for the Busoga East Police said the police and rescue services department would maintain a presence at the school to guarantee the children’s safe evacuation from the nearby classrooms.
