UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | The High Court’s Family Division in Kampala is scheduled to commence hearing the divorce case involving prominent tycoon Drake Lubega and his estranged wife, Jalia Nagawa, on February 15, 2024.
The decision follows the confirmation by High Court Judge Elizabeth Kabanda that all requisite documents had been appropriately filed on the court record.
In this divorce case, Ms Nagawa is seeking the dissolution of her marriage to Mr Lubega and the division of both matrimonial and business assets.
According to Ms. Nagawa, she introduced Mr. Lubega to her parents in June 1984, adhering to Kiganda customs, and they subsequently married on August 1, 1989, following customary practices, despite not having children together.
Ms Nagawa alleges 31 prime properties owned by Tycoon Lubega and seeks a court order for their disposal.
She claims that her time with Mr Lubega was marked by cruelty, denial of conjugal rights, economic servitude, and violence, resulting in several miscarriages, among other issues.
Contrarily, Mr Lubega refutes the assertion of any marriage celebration with Ms Nagawa, contending that in 1984, he was already married to Nalongo Peace Lubega, with whom he had seven children.
He states that he separated from Nalongo Peace Lubega in 1992 and began residing in Banda, Bweyogerere, where he met Ms. Nagawa.
According to Mr. Lubega, they cohabited for about a year until 1993 when they parted ways, emphasising that, due to the brief duration of their relationship, they never had any children together.
In his defence, Mr. Lubega, through his legal representation, asserts that during the one-year cohabitation with Ms. Nagawa, they did not engage in any joint business arrangements or partnerships.
He denies her claims of economic contributions to his businesses and states that they never conducted any business together.
Furthermore, Mr. Lubega discloses that in 1994, he met Ms. Benita Lubega, whom he married in December 2000, and had four children.
Despite Ms Benita Lubega filing for divorce later on, Mr Lubega emphasises that he has never conducted any business with Ms Nagawa and asserts that she holds no legal or equitable interest in his properties.
As the divorce proceedings unfold, both parties present contrasting narratives, highlighting the complexities of personal and business relationships intertwined in legal disputes of this nature.
