UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | An altercation over land has emerged between a senior Uganda Peoples’ Defense Forces (UPDF) soldier and the family of his deceased former driver.
The late Ibrahim Kumali’s family asserts that Major Jimmy Katende is attempting to expel them from a piece of land they have inhabited for the past 18 years.
Situated in Busega Kibumiro Zone, Rubaga Division, the disputed land has become the focal point of a legal battle.
Widow Sylvia Namee adamantly claims that her husband had purchased the contested property directly from the UPDF soldier.
“We are at a loss as to what to do. My husband acquired this land from the Major during his tenure as his driver. However, following his demise in 2017, we began receiving eviction notices and warnings from Major Katende,” Namee stated over the weekend.
She continued, “After being inundated with numerous eviction notices, we were compelled to seek recourse through the courts, hoping for a just resolution. Unfortunately, the Major’s extensive connections delayed the magistrate court’s ruling on the true ownership of the land.”
The aggrieved family has taken their case to President Museveni via the office of Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Aminah Lukanga, arguing that the eviction notices originated from an unauthorised source.
In a letter dated November 3, 2022, the RCC directed Major Katende to halt any eviction actions on the disputed land, citing an ongoing appeal by the family awaiting determination in the magistrate court.
The complainants disclosed that Lukanga had organised a mediation session, yet Major Katende failed to attend.
Namee alleges that while she was away in the village last week, she received news that the soldier had evicted them despite the unresolved court case.
However, Major Katende directed Kumali’s family to the court he claimed had issued the eviction order.
“Advise them to address their concerns to the court that rendered the decision. There is no need for them to waste your time over this matter. The court’s ruling is final,” Maj Katende asserted.
