UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | The Busega-Kyengera Road along the Kampala-Masaka Highway witnessed collapsed, prompting the diversion of Masaka Road traffic.
The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) attributed the collapse to erosion, specifically the rising water levels in the Lubigi swamp area.
In a swift response, UNRA deployed a dedicated team to address the emergency, collaborating with the Uganda Police Force to cordon off the affected area.
Approximately 1.5 meters of the road pavement near the embankment suffered significant damage due to the unforeseen disaster.
UNRA emphasised the urgent need to restore this critical roadway section, urging road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic guidelines during diversions.
The Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety advised motorists heading towards Masaka to divert from Busega-Kyengera Roundabout, using Nakawuka Road at Nateete Traffic lights or Mityana Road to avoid congestion.
The road’s partial sinking at the Busega roundabout road resulted from heavy downpours on Tuesday night.
Traffic police spokesperson Michael Kananura confirmed that UNRA engineers, in collaboration with traffic police, are assessing the extent of the damage.
The Uganda National Roads Authority clarified that the erosion at the foot of the embankment caused the pavement damage.
Safety measures, including the cordoning off of the affected area, were promptly implemented.
With the El-Nino season causing damage to road infrastructure across the country, authorities assured the public that resources are secured for rehabilitation once the season concludes.
The Uganda National Meteorological Authority projects the El-Nino season to end in February 2024.
As authorities work on restoring the affected road section, road users are urged to stay informed and follow traffic guidelines for a safe and efficient commute.
