UGANDA, Kyankwanzi | Real Muloodi News | In a devastating incident, eight members of the same family lost their lives in a house fire that occurred in Kyankwanzi District, Central Uganda.

The fire, which took place in the early hours of Friday morning 19th May 2023 at Kalagi B Village, Kalagi-Masode Town Council, also left five others injured.

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

The victims of the fire have been identified as Juliana Agnes Mukansiime (60), Mariam Nawanyana (36), Zaituni Mukakigyeri (32), Patricia Namubiru (8), Leticia Nsinga (6), Patrick Kisakye (2), Martine Byakatonda (7), and Gerald Bbale (7).

Among the injured are Nyabutono Mukambabuka (30), Ruth Namata (16), and an unidentified 10-year-old girl known as Mumbejja.

Unfortunately, Mukakigyeri and Byakatonda succumbed to their injuries shortly after being admitted to Kiboga General Hospital.

Patrick Kyalimpa, the chairperson of Kalagi B Village, suggested that the fire may have been started by Nawanyana due to a long-standing land dispute within the family. The disputed land, measuring six acres, is located in Kiseresi Village.

According to Kyalimpa, Nawanyana had been engaged in a conflict over the land, and tensions had escalated, with threats being made.

Allegations were made that their father had not distributed the family’s properties equally among his children, adding to the dispute.

Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the late John Luwawuka, the family head, was facing financial difficulties while caring for his wife, Juliana Agnes Mukansiime.

In an attempt to alleviate the family’s financial burden, Luwawuka sold a plot of land to Nawanyana for USh6m.

However, other family members objected to Nawanyana’s acquisition of the plot. It is suspected that Nawanyana, after spending the night consuming intoxicating drinks with family members, locked the door, doused herself with petrol, and set herself on fire, resulting in the spread of the fire throughout the house.

This tragic incident led to the loss of six lives and injuries to five others.

The police visited and documented the crime scene, and the bodies of the deceased, including Mukankubito, were transported to the Kiboga General Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.

The injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at Kiboga Hospital. Investigations into the incident are still ongoing as authorities seek to gather more information and determine the exact sequence of events that led to the devastating Kyankwanzi house fire.
