Tragedy Strikes as Fire Engulfs Kampala City House Shopping Centre

UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | A devastating fire broke out at the City House shopping centre in Kampala on December 11, causing significant damage to the large business complex that houses various rentals, including the Democratic Party (DP) office.

The incident, which occurred around 8:30 am, destroyed merchandise worth millions of shillings and claimed the life of one person.

The fire, whose cause remains under investigation by the Uganda Police, tore through the walls and roof of City House, prompting a swift response from the Kampala Metropolitan Police and the fire brigade.

Authorities deployed seven fire trucks to contain the blaze and work on extinguishing the flames.

Kampala Central Division Mayor, Salim Uhuru, expressed his condolences for the tragic event and urged property owners to prioritise fire safety measures.

He emphasised the importance of having firefighting equipment on the premises and highlighted the role it could play in minimising damages caused by fire outbreaks.

“It’s a bad Monday. Unfortunately, the fire has caused a lot of damage here, but as KCCA we have come out with by-laws. All property owners must have fire extinguishers because that was supposed to be the first equipment to fight the fire before the police,” Mayor Salim commented.

The cause of the fire at the City House shopping centre remains unknown, and efforts are ongoing to extinguish it. The building, which accommodates various businesses, features restaurants and stationery shops on the first floor, textile shops on the ground floor, and office outlets on the third floor.

In response to the incident, Equity Bank issued a public notice, informing customers about the fire at the City House building adjacent to Church House, where the bank’s head office and branches are located.

While temporarily closing the affected premises, the notice assured customers that there was no damage to the bank and that staff had been safely evacuated.

Equity Bank encouraged customers to use alternative branches in Kampala, Equi-Duuka Agents, and digital banking channels, which remained operational.

The bank expressed hope that the situation would be under control soon, allowing normal services to resume at Church House.
