UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | As the last move in the Simbamanyo House ownership battle, the property Mogul Dr Sudhir Ruparelia has renamed his newly purchased building to Gender and Labour House.

The naming of the Simbamanyo building comes months after the court confirmed Dr Sudhir as the rightful owner of the Simbamanyo building. Sudhir has been battling in court with Equity Bank and Mr Peter Kamya, the former Simbamanyo owner.

In October 2020, Dr Sudhir bought the Simbamanyo building from Equity Bank for Shs18.5b after Peter Kamya failed to service a bank loan.

Mr Peter Kamya lost Afrique Suites in Mutongo because of the bank loan, and Equity Bank sold it to Luwaluwa Investments.

The Simbamanyo building on Plot 2 Lumumba Avenue currently houses the Ministry of Labour, Gender, and Social Development among other tenants.

Last year, Sam Kirubi, the Managing Director of Equity Bank, confirmed the sale of Simbamanyo property to Meera Investments Ltd, a real estate arm of the Ruparelia Group.

“We are writing to inform you that Equity Bank Uganda Limited, as mortgagee, has completed the sale of land comprised in LRV 2220 folio 3 plot 2, Lumumba Avenue Simbamanyo House. After a public auction concluded on 8 October 2020 to the best-evaluated bidder M/s Meera Investments Ltd,” Sam noted.

Kamya and his Simbamanyo Estates ran to court, declaring the sale of his property illegal, claiming there was fraud in the sale.

However, in July, Kamya lost the appeal to the equity bank. This was the third time Kamya had run to court, putting the ownership battle of the Simbamanyo building to rest.

Both the High Court and Court of Appeal cleared the acquisition of the building by Sudhir’s Meera Investments Ltd and gave him the go-ahead to change its name as he wished.

Sudhir changed the Simbamanyo building name to Gender & Labour House, symbolising its major tenants – The Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Development.
