UGANDA, Kabale | Real Muloodi News | Hon. Dr Chris Baryomunsi, the former Minister of State for Urban Development, has launched the restoration of three roads in Kabale Municipality. According to UGNEWS24, the three roads will be upgraded under Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) Project Additional Funding (AD) and will cost UGX 21.7 billion.
The roads slated for upgrade are the 0.76 km Bwankosa road, which connects Nyerere Avenue and Kabale Shopping Centre. The 0.34 km Bushekwire road. It connects Kabale Shopping Centre to Kabale Main Road in the Central Division. Lastly, the 2.49 km Rushoroza Road. This road connects Kabale Diocesan headquarters to the Katuna-Kabale Road.
Multiplex Construction Company Limited and International Construction Company Limited of Turkey received the contract for the project.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni pledged the tarmacking of Rushoroza Road in August 2010 during his visit to Rushoroza Cathedral. However, according to URN, the upgrading took a long time that annoyed a section of the catholic community in the Kabale diocese.
While launching the project at Rushoroza Cathedral, Dr Baryomunsi apologized for the delay and said it was because of procurement interruptions.
Hon. Baryomunsi further promised the upgrade of the three roads to be completed within a year. Tarmacking, installation of solar street lights, drainage, walkways and beautification are all-inclusive.
Dr Baryomunsi said the rebuilding of Rushoroza Road would cost Shs. 13.71Bn, Bwankosa Road Shs. 5.49Bn and Bushekwire Road will cost Shs. 2.50Bn.
The three Kabale roads have been in terrible shape for a long time, with large potholes and stagnant water whenever it rains.
Mr Sentaro disclosed to URN that they are looking for a consultant to manage the project’s working process. He promised to find one within three weeks.
The Mayor urged Mr Baryomunsi to help him return the funds to Municipal accounts, as the unutilized funds are due to be returned to the Treasury. He argues they cannot use the unutilized funds in the remaining days. The Minister assured the Mayor that the money shall remain intact, URN reports.
Bishop Callist Rubaramira, the Bishop of Kabale Diocese, hailed the president for finally honouring the pledge to tarmac the road. The Bishop says that the delay is understandable since there was a known problem.
Sifah Kadui Kikonyogo, the vice president of Kabale Municipal Development, says that the rehabilitation of these roads will give Kabale City a fresh look in 2023. Good roads will boost tourism and attract more investors to Kabale.
Mr Moses Bossa, the director of multiplex construction, assured officials that he would complete the project within the agreed time frame.
