UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) celebrated its 30th anniversary on 15th September 2021 at Kololo independence grounds. His Excellency, President Yoweri Museveni, and former URA staff and key stakeholders graced this year’s celebrations.

During the ceremony, the Commissioner-General of the Uganda Revenue Authority, John Musinguzi, addressed the audience emphasizing URA’s commitment towards the principle of zero tolerance to corruption.

The former URA Commissioner General Allen Kagina encouraged all stakeholders to support the authority to increase tax collections.

Earlier this year, URA reported that only one million people in Uganda are paying taxes despite Uganda’s large population of approximately 40 million.

Kagina explained, URA should collect more taxes that will support the government in implementing many development projects. Furthermore, Kagina said that as the country continues to borrow from abroad, it will remain a servant to the lenders.

During Kagina’s leadership, URA went through an intense rebranding. She shed light on how the systems changed. URA was focusing on enforcement. She ensured that tax education was introduced, which led to positive results.

Kagina also advised the current Commissioner General John Musinguzi that “to succeed saying everything is possible with prayer and hard work.”

According to Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index 2020, Uganda ranks 142 out of 179 countries.

During his address, Musinguzi claimed he and his team are working on rebuilding trust and URA’s credibility as a trustworthy partner in the country’s development.

During the event of its 30th anniversary, URA also launched Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities. The theme for the launch of its CSR activities is “Believe there is Good”, and one of the first activities includes donations to China–Uganda Friendship Hospital in Naguru.

Finally, Mr Musinguzi also highlighted that URA will use technology to enhance the payment systems, tax education, and overall tax compliance.
