UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | The third-largest pizza chain globally, Papa John’s International Inc. recently revealed it would open 60 outlets throughout Uganda and Kenya. The American pizza chain, based in Louisville, Kentucky, announced the news on Tuesday last week.

“Establishing ourselves in Sub-Saharan Africa for the first time presents a great opportunity for Papa Johns to deliver on our global momentum as a brand,” said Amanda Clark, Papa John’s Chief Development Officer.

Papa John’s will open the outlets in a partnership deal with Kitchen Express, a subsidiary of AAH Limited, the majority shareholder of Hass Petroleum Group, which operates 140 petrol stations in 10 African countries.

Under the deal, Papa John’s, which runs 5,500 restaurants in 50 countries, will open outlets at Hass’s properties in Kenya and Uganda.

This deal is in line with Hass’ goal of expanding its non-fuel business. Oil companies have increasingly attracted international food chains to their properties, a business model geared towards bringing in rental income and boosting fuel sales.

In 2019, Vivo Energy, another oil company that trades under the Shell brand name, said it would take a 50% stake from KFC in East Africa. In the deal, Vivo partnered with East African food franchise Kuku Foods East Africa Holdings.

“We are excited to partner with Papa John’s as it continues its expansion around the globe. Papa John’s is a company whose vision and values are closely aligned to our own, and this partnership brings together two brands built on a legacy of quality and service,” said Abdinasir Ali Hassan, chairperson of Kitchen Express and Hass Petroleum Group.

Kitchen Express holds the master franchise rights for this pizza chain in Kenya and Uganda.

In Uganda, Papa John’s will rival other international brands already established in Uganda like KFC, Pizza Hut, Burger King, and Great Burgers.

According to a study by McKinsey & Co, these international food chains have turned to the African market for growth as they are attracted by the young population, fast economic growth, and rising disposable incomes.
