UGANDA, Namugongo | Real Muloodi News | The construction of the 25000 seater amphitheatre at the Anglican shrine in Namugongo is nearing completion, ahead of this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations on June 3, 2023.
The amphitheatre is set to host over 4,000 pilgrims during the event. Most of the seats have been installed, while the beautification of the venue ahead of the celebrations is ongoing.
According to officials, the government-funded construction works are being supervised by the Ministry of Works, with completion expected by June 3, 2023.
Rebecca Kadaga, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs, who is also the chairperson of the central organising committee, expressed her gratitude towards the government for funding the project.
Kadaga led a media tour of the facility on Thursday 27 April 2023, accompanied by bishops from all the dioceses under the Anglican Church, Justice James Ogoola, the head of publicity of the central organising committee, the State Minister for East African Community affairs, Magode Ikuya, and Budadiri West County MP Nathan Nandala Mafabi.
Kadaga praised the government for the construction of the amphitheatre, stating that it will be used for the first time by the Eastern Diocese.
She further added that in the past, pilgrims would have to sit on the grass, but with the new amphitheatre, this would no longer be the case. Construction works to expand other church buildings ahead of the celebrations are also ongoing.
“By the grace of God, Eastern Diocese will be the first to use this magnificent amphitheatre. Those of you who have been coming here in the past have been sitting on the grass. When it rains, the church disperses, but here we are, with the new amphitheatre, we thank the government,” Kadaga said.
The preparations for the Martyrs’ Day celebrations at the Anglican Church Namugongo are in high gear, and this year’s celebrations will be led by the Dioceses of the Eastern cluster.
The completion of the amphitheatre is a significant development for the Namugongo shrine, as it will not only provide a comfortable seating arrangement for pilgrims but also avert the inconveniences that come with unfavourable weather conditions.
