UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | The KCCA Valuation Court, led by Chairperson Samuel Muyizzi, convened a significant session at Okuvu Church in Mbuya, Nakawa Division, focusing on addressing property tax concerns and promoting community engagement.
The sessions, scheduled to run until Thursday, February 15, 2024, aimed to provide a platform for residents to address property tax-related concerns.
Expressing gratitude to Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago for initiatives that bring the court closer to the people, Muyizzi emphasised the importance of accessibility and community involvement in matters concerning property taxation.
He highlighted the significance of adhering to legal procedures, stressing the requirement for individuals to submit petitions within 30 days after being levied with property taxes.
Acknowledging challenges faced by some individuals in meeting the petition deadline, Muyizzi assured inclusivity and fairness in the court’s proceedings, aiming to avoid the exclusion of those who missed the timeframe.
He credited the Executive Director (ED), Dorothy Kisaka, for advocating the application of common law and equity in interactions with the community, thanking her and her team for supporting the court’s activities.
Highlighting the crucial role of property tax in community development, Muyizzi reiterated the court’s position as a vital link in the taxation process.
He emphasised the importance of sensitisation efforts to ensure community members understand the implications of property tax decisions, aiming for informed participation.
Functioning with powers similar to a Magistrate’s court, the Valuation Court specialises in resolving property tax issues within the division.
Its responsibilities include property valuations, reviewing property values upon request, and ruling on tax exemptions.
Particularly significant is its authority to reassess property rates based on valid arguments presented by complainants, ensuring fairness in taxation practices.
The presence of Godfrey Luyombya, Speaker of Nakawa Division, and Charles Mpindi, Councilor, at the session highlighted the collaborative efforts of local authorities in addressing community concerns.
The Valuation Court’s commitment to transparency and fairness underscores its pivotal role in promoting equitable property taxation and enhancing community participation in governance processes.
