UGANDA, Wakiso | Real Muloodi News | The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has announced plans to upgrade five key roads in Wakiso District, aiming to enhance transportation and connectivity in the area.
The project, totalling 72.5 kilometres, is set to transform the road infrastructure within Wakiso, Kampala, and Mpigi Districts, facilitating smoother travel and trade.
The roads earmarked for upgrading include the Kisubi-Nakawuka-Nateete (27km) route, Nakawuka-Kasanje-Mpigi (22km) stretch, Nakawuka-Mawagulu-Nanziga-Maya (11km) path, Kasanje-Buwaya (9km) road, and the Entebbe-Nakiwogo (3.5km) Road.
These roads, currently classified as Class C Gravel, will be upgraded to Asphaltic paved standard, enhancing their durability and usability.
Funded by the government and contracted to China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC), the project is estimated to cost Shs340.5 billion.
The initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion, improve access to goods and services, and boost socio-economic development in the region.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony held at Nakawuka playground in Wakiso District, emphasised the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises to the people.
She stated, “The government of Uganda prioritises construction of roads and health facilities because we know that they contribute a lot to the development of the people. I, therefore, ask you to use roads that we are going to give you to develop your communities.”
Ms Nabbanja highlighted the anticipated benefits of the upgraded roads, including enhanced connectivity between the Southwestern Region and Entebbe International Airport, reduced travel times, and improved access to essential services.
She emphasised that the project aligns with the government’s agenda to foster national development and prosperity.
Minister for Works and Transport, Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, addressed the challenges facing the project, particularly land acquisition.
He noted that only a fraction of the allocated funds for compensation had been disbursed, urging affected landowners to cooperate with authorities to expedite the process.
Gen Wamala assured residents that compensation would be provided as soon as funds become available.
Acknowledging the potential for job creation and economic growth, Gen Wamala encouraged local communities to seize opportunities presented by the project.
However, he cautioned against acts of vandalism and theft, urging residents to uphold integrity and respect company property.
Residents of Nakawuka expressed optimism about the transformative impact of the road upgrades on their daily lives.
Ben Matsiko, a boda boda rider, welcomed the initiative, citing the long-standing challenges of traffic congestion and poor road conditions. He anticipated significant time and cost savings once the project was completed.
Gorreti Namujju, a local businesswoman, highlighted the economic hardships caused by inadequate road infrastructure.
She expressed relief at the prospect of improved road networks, which would facilitate smoother transportation of goods and services, ultimately benefiting businesses and residents alike.
