UGANDA, Jinja | Real Muloodi News | The construction of the Uganda Tourism School in Jinja is almost complete.

The Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute (UHTTI) will be a government owned facility committed to producing highly skilled and competent workforce for the tourism and hospitality sector. Once operational, the new UHTTI facility will produce personnel who will deliver professional and sustainable services to sector at both national and international levels.

ROKO Construction Ltd officials have said the facility will be handed over to the government upon completion of the physical works, which are about 90 per cent completed.

ROKO got the contract on 7th March 2018 under the supervision of Arch Design Limited for 12 months. Because of variations and additional jobs added to the original contract, ROKO received three extensions to 30th August 2019, 13th December 2019, and 14th February 2020.

The effects of Covid-19, such as the restrictions and directives by the government, further affected cash flow and operations. As a result, the government gave ROKO two additional extensions for up to 30th September 2020 and 9th January 2021.

The extension was to implement mitigating measures. The second lockdown delayed the completion of the project further, and the expected completion of Phase 1 works is now on 22nd October 2021.

According to Mr Muhangi, ROKO executes the highest quality works as per the contract.

“We are now focused on achieving practical completion of the project as soon as possible while maintaining the highest quality standards in construction using high-quality materials and very skilled personnel to satisfy our customer requirements,” Mr Bernard said.

Once completed, the institution will have a double-storied hotel building, two training kitchens and restaurants, and a laundry block. There will also be a powerhouse, two gatehouses and also a garbage collection house.

The government has paid one certificate because of the project’s progress, which is 88.28% financial and 89% physical.

“We are concluding documentation for the second phase, which shall include the construction of one additional floor to the hotel block with all electrical reticulation,” Mr Muhangi said.

During the tour, men were at work partitioning, roofing and shuttering. Other workers were working on internal and external finishes and electrical installations.

According to Mr Muhangi, most of the pending works depend on the commencement of phase II of the project. The construction of one additional floor to the hotel block with all electrical reticulation will begin in phase 2.

Competitiveness and Enterprise Development Project undertook the construction of the Institute worth USh 380b. The project received funding from the Government of Uganda, World Bank and was coordinated by the Private Sector Foundation Uganda.
